What about Gummy Vitamins? Are they good for you? Find out what our Doctors think…

As doctors and experts about vitamins, people often ask “Are gummy vitamins good for you? Should I take gummy vitamins?” While there are many gummy vitamins for adults on the market today, the answers to these questions are complicated. First off, not all gummy vitamins are created equally. As with any vitamins, there is a vast range of formulations and products.

So why take a gummy vitamins? It seems that there are many people who do not like swallowing vitamins in pill or tablet form.  The truth is, most people can tolerate and actually do not mind swallowing vitamins in tablet form if they are the right size, shape and have the proper coating. At Vous Vitamin we worked long and hard when creating our custom daily vitamins to make sure they were easy to swallow smooth coating. (Take our personalized vitamin quiz to get yours.)

But why else take gummy vitamins? Some people actually like them and think of them as a daily treat or type of candy.  This may help if you have a hard time getting into a good routine of taking vitamins. However, to be clear, there are some downsides to this delivery format for vitamins.

What could possibly be wrong with gummy vitamins for adults? It turns out, that some of the contents of gummy vitamins may not be all that desirable to many people. For example, the gelatin in many of them raises issues for those who are vegetarian or keep a kosher diet. Many (not all) contain animal sourced gelatin. Also, they can be very high in sugar content. Who wants to take in tons of sugar with something that is supposed to improve your health? All of that gelatinous, sticky material filled with sugar is of course less than ideal for your teeth and dental hygiene.

So are gummy vitamins good for you? Not exactly. Not only is all the sugar harmful to your teeth and to your diet, they can be highly caloric, sometimes 50-100 calories daily.  I am sure most of us would rather save our calories for actual foods we enjoy.

Do gummy vitamins contain the same vitamins as other vitamins? Often they do not. It seems that their manufacturers have trouble putting all of the nutrients into this form that is still edible and tasty, thus they often forgo significant quantities of certain vitamins in order to maintain flavor and make room for all the additives that must go in to the gummy formulation. Certain nutrients are harder to come by in gummy vitamins, such as iron and calcium, as these are hard to suspend in significant digestible quantities in this format.

Some of the most commonly marketed gummy vitamins for hairloss for women and men do not contain enough of or any of some of the key nutrients we find to be helpful for hair loss. For example they may contain low doses of Vitamin D, some biotin and typically do not contain iron, where iron deficiency is one of the most common causes of thinning hair.

When people ask us, “Should I take gummy vitamins?” we can only conclude that you should take gummy vitamins only if you have no other alternative. If you absolutely can not swallow pills, even those that are easy to swallow (see more on Silky Swallow), then gummy vitamins may be a reasonable option for you. As for which gummy vitamin for adults to take, that of course depends on who you are. Which vitamins to take is determined by individual needs based on your diet, lifestyle and health concerns. This is best done with a custom all in one vitamin that meets your individual needs. Taking too much of the right vitamins or taking the wrong vitamins can be harmful.
